I’ve been wanting a Vespa for years. The fascination has come in waves, where for weeks on end I’ve trolled the classifieds in Craigslist, researched everything about scooters, and looked into motorcycles permits.
Two weeks ago, the wave hit me hard, and I knew it was now or never. I went to a local Vespa store to check out the new models, and their shocking prices. Oof. The excitement abated, but only slightly. I went back to my dear friend Craigslist and resumed my research. In the meantime, I got my motorcycle permit at the DMV, checked into insurance, and bought a glossy new helmet. There was no turning back now. Finally, I chanced upon a little beaut that a young woman had won as a prize. Brand new - just 8 miles on it - and “dragon red.” Just 50 CCs, which is none too powerful, but a good starter scoot to test my skill and dedication.
The actual day of purchase turned out to be more like an adoption: as she handed over the various paperwork and I handed over the cashier’s check, her parents snapped pictures. When I emailed later to thank her, she said her family was happy that it had gone to a good home.
As with every adoption, I had to think of a good name. And it had to be Italian, of course. And he shall be named... Vincenzo.
